At the heart
of every piece created by master sculptor M. Pena is the artist's
passion for living creatures. This passion, coupled with a lifelong
study of animal behavior and anatomy, and an astonishing gift for
three-dimensional art, results in sculptures so intriguing and
lifelike they are without equal.
Growing up
in California, Pena surrounded herself with animals. Keeping more
than two dozen aquariums in her childhood bedroom, a pet toad in a
wastebasket, and a chicken in a bucket, her collection of pets soon
became the subjects of her artwork.
In college, Pena studied biology and zoology in addition to
painting, drawing and sculpture.
Today, the
artist is never far from her animals. Her glass-walled studio is
surrounded by a veritable nature preserve: from parakeets and
ponies, to iguanas, tortoises and llamas. These creatures are the
living well from which Pena draws inspiration... the models for the
incredibly accurate detail in her work.
From the "Mariner's
Watch Tower" huddled on a tiny Mediterranean island, to the austere
"Castle of the Hawks" perched high in the rocky Pyrenees mountains
of northern Spain, Windstone Editions' Castles by Kinsella span not
only the European continent, but the breadth of the imagination as
well. Each castle, a work of Kinsella's imagination and artistry,
has its own unique and memorable story, ranging from the isolated
"Alchemist's Tower" where an eccentric scientist toiled to turn lead
into gold, to the dazzling "Castle of the Merry Ghost" where it is
said the spirit of the jovial cellar master can still be heard
chuckling to himself.

The Ki-Rin, or oriental unicorn, were
first seen in China in 2697 B.C. Since then, their rare mythical appearances have heralded
great events. They are considered to be an especially good omen at
the birth of a child (one is said to have visited the mother of
Confucius to foretell of her son's greatness). Like the European
unicorn, the Ki-Rin's single horn is symbolic of its purity and
spiritual, beneficent nature. The pictures do NOT do these
pieces justice. They are stunningly detailed with a
striking color contrast.Retired
